Scattered Frequencies [for Edgar Froese]

about

This became a watershed composition on many levels: it was the first time I had written a piece specifically as a homage to an artist whose music was a huge inspiration to me - Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese. It was also the first full-fledged 'opus' in my repertoire: a sprawling, 14-minute excursion, influenced in part by such TD classic albums as "Phaedra" and "Rubycon."

Ambientism was my second commercially-released recording - as such, I was still enamoured of strictly analogue synthesis, and was recording direct to digital multitrack recorder; a piece of hardware that I still turn to from time to time when not utilizing a DAW like Ableton Live. I remember the day I finished mastering the album: I had my friend Ed Moore (a huge fan of classic electronic music) come over to a 'listening party.' I watched how intently he was absorbing this closing track, listening to the various twists and turns and modulations, and when it was over, we both looked at each other - his reaction affirmed what I had set out to achieve, and I knew this album would be a stepping stone for me as a composer; gaining praise from e/i electronic magazine, and becoming my first release to earn a place on SomaFm radio's Drone Zone playlist.
