Spirit Animal

from Homage by David Gerard

/

about

Folks who are familiar with Keith Jarrett's idiosyncratic, experimental "Spirits" disc will understand this homage. I wanted to bring a slightly contemporary edge to the visceral, primitive ambience on his original, released in 1985. Upon its arrival, music critics did not warm up to his radical change of sound and genre.

Too bad for them. It is also this album whose liner notes by Jarrett himself contain the now-infamous line defining what makes one a technician on an instrument, and what makes a true artist/composer committed to making music. This resonated with me on so many levels, I felt vindicated that a man of Jarrett's renown and stature shared my opinion. As a composer, I will be forever indebted to him for his priceless advice.

Love 'ya, bro.
