Tethered

about

A casual conversation on an ambient Facebook group got heated, when I dared suggest that a track by a Wayfarer artist did not meet the basic criterion to be considered ambient music (certainly not amongst veterans of electronic music), but had more in common with a Narada label pianist. One of the group's admins was so offended by my remarks, future posts from me were blacklisted, and so I left. Such is the (abuse of) power of Facebook.

A fellow group member took the side of the label head, and likened it to Eno's "Music For Airports." Now normally, I'd be one to just say "To each his own opinion" and let it go at that - but it bothered me that someone well familiar with Eno's work would validate that comparison.

Well as the saying goes, "If you think you can do better...." And so, I set about writing this piece: rather than merely looking to past Eno work as 'inspiration', I asked myself, "If I were to write a homage to Brian Eno, how would I go about that?

The fruits of such labours can be heard here. Even my FB group detractor had to admit, upon hearing "Tethered" that it was I, not said Wayfarer artist who wrote a piece in the vein of Ambient One: Music For Airports. I felt both vindicated and excited that I could add another artist to pay tribute to for this concept album - an artist I can unapologetically acknowledge as a significant influence upon my journey as a musician and composer. Thanks, Mr. Eno.
