Contemplating The Engine Room

about

This 'musique concrete' was inspired by Harry Partch, and while sonically, not a homage in the pure sense of the word, it pays tribute to the experimentation explored by Partch, Cage, Pärt, etc.

Ever since I can remember, I found a fascination and even meditative quality to certain industrial sounds: the hum of machinery, the ambience of factories, the noise emitted by electromagnetic fields. I thought it would be interesting to create that environment as a sound collage.

But I also wanted to make sure it wasn't a 'synthesized' outcome - that is, I did not want to create an electronic representation. So I began with laying down an automated drone, then thought about what certain machines would sound like in operation: assembly line activity, robotics, timed switches going on and off - and worked in earnest to recreate them.

In the end, my objective was to create this in such a way as its authenticity would be gleaned by anyone listening. And while I accept that "Engine Room" will not likely wind up on any station playlists [especially now that SomaFm's experimental station "Earwaves" bid a fond farewell in 2017], I hope those with an ear for innovational music will find themselves intrigued.

Sidebar: Hosannahs to Mike Watt, as I copped the title from one of his solo album recordings.
